Brisbane Icon Turns 30
Beloved by Brisbane residents, foreign tourists, celebrities – and even a ghost, so the rumour goes – the Paddington Antique Centre is celebrating its thirtieth birthday. Everyone is invited to come along to the centre on the weekend of 23-24 May to join the birthday festivities.
“We were one of the first antique centres established in Australia,” Suzy Baines, Director of the Paddington Antique Centre, said.
“We’re so fortunate that the centre is housed in a heritage-listed building, rich in its own history. It was formerly the Plaza Theatre, which opened in 1929. In its day it was a hugely popular meeting place for Paddington residents, often attracting more than 1000 patrons of an evening.”
Many retail establishments have come and gone, but the Paddington Antique Centre has stood the test of time. And thanks to a new generation of young collectors, this Brisbane icon should continue to exist for a long time to come.
“Some young collectors love retro furniture. Others love vintage fashion. Some collect old phones or typewriters. They put a contemporary twist on things, and make them funky. They can see the character in these items. I think it’s a backlash against modern manufacturing,” Ms Baines said.
On the weekend of 23-24 May, there will be live music, free popcorn, and a photo exhibition showcasing finalists from a photo competition centred around the theme “This is Paddington.”
“The Brisbane suburb of Paddington is full of personality. Its architecture, shops, cafes – even its footpaths – are rich in character, and often rich in history. So we wanted to celebrate our local area, and engage with our community through this photo competition and exhibition,” Ms Baines said.
